## The short answer

An **eSIM** is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of putting a plastic card in a tray, you add a mobile plan by scanning a QR code or following an app's steps. For students, an eSIM can mean you have data when you land, so you can use maps, ride apps and messages straight away. It only works if your phone supports it and is unlocked.

## What you need

- **An eSIM-compatible phone.** Check your phone's settings or the manufacturer's page.
- **An unlocked phone.** If your phone is locked to an Indian network, ask your provider about unlocking.
- **A plan** from a provider that covers your destination, for the days or weeks you need.
- **Internet access** to install the eSIM, usually Wi-Fi.

## How it usually works

1. Choose a provider and a plan for your destination.
2. After purchase, you receive a QR code or install instructions.
3. On your phone, you add the eSIM through your settings.
4. Many eSIMs start counting days when you first connect in the destination, but check each provider's terms.
5. In your phone's settings, choose which SIM is used for data, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line if the provider says to.

## Keep your Indian number

Your Indian bank, UPI apps and other services may send one-time passwords to your Indian mobile number. Many phones can hold a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time, so you can keep your Indian number active for OTPs while you use the eSIM for data. Check your Indian operator's international options and how you will receive OTPs.

## What to compare

- **Data allowance and validity.** How much data, and for how many days?
- **Coverage.** Does it work where you will live and study?
- **Voice and SMS.** Many travel eSIMs are data only.
- **Hotspot.** Can you share data with a laptop?
- **Top-up and support.** How do you add more data, and who do you contact if it fails?
- **Refund and terms.** What happens if your phone does not work with it?
