## The short answer

India’s customs rules apply to what you bring back, and the destination’s border page says what you may take out and what to declare. Read both before you shop, keep receipts for anything you may need to show or claim, and declare what the page says you must. When you are home, cancel temporary services, back up your photos and send any claim your cover allows.

## Key terms in plain English

- **Customs:** the authority that regulates what comes into and out of a country.
- **Declaration:** telling customs that you carry something, on a form or at a point in the airport.
- **Duty:** a charge that can apply to some goods. The customs page says when.
- **Receipt:** proof of what you bought and paid. It helps if you are asked.

## Before you shop

- Read India’s official [customs page](https://www.cbic.gov.in/entities/customs) for travellers.
- Read the destination’s page on what you can take out, for example [Bringing goods into the UK](https://www.gov.uk/bringing-goods-into-uk-personal-use/banned-and-restricted-goods), [Bring personal goods into Canada](https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/bgb-rmf-eng.html), [Can you bring it in? (Australia)](https://www.abf.gov.au/entering-and-leaving-australia/can-you-bring-it-in) and [Travel: customs rules (Germany)](https://www.zoll.de/EN/Private-individuals/Travel/travel_node.html).
- Keep high-value items’ receipts, and the original packaging if you can.
- Leave room in your bags, and check the airline’s baggage rules.

## At the airport

- Keep receipts and documents in hand baggage.
- Declare what the page says you must, even when it feels awkward.
- Answer customs questions truthfully and calmly.

## After the trip

- Cancel or let lapse any temporary eSIM, stay or pass.
- Send a claim to your insurer if something was lost, delayed or cancelled, with the documents it asks for.
- Back up your photos and save your documents in your vault.
- Check your card statements for charges you do not recognise.
